Anthropology and anthropologists: The modern British school
Watch this item Watching Watch list is full. Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition. This substantially revised and updated third edition takes the critical and historical account of British anthropology from mid-nineteenth century up to the present day, discussing the significant developments of the last ten years. But I understand that this might be a completely new enterprise.
There is a great emphasis on the so-called external factors of knowledge production, such as the institutional settings, social backgrounds, political context, and even personalities of the authors addressed. As a result, reading the book felt at times like reading a novel. On the other hand, the theories discussed are explained in a clear and concise manner. That combination on both external and internal factors of knowledge production makes the book a very interesting history of social anthropology.
Having said that, it is important to mention that as a reader expecting an ethnographic account of British social anthropology, I would have liked to find more ethnographic descriptions of social situations in the development of the field. In any case, despite the mentioned criticism, the fourth edition of Anthropology and anthropologists is a must not only for anthropologists, but also for historians and sociologists of science and ideas, and other social scientists interested in the history of anthropology and its methods and theories.
